How difficult is it to get started using CheckMark Payroll?


Our users report that Payroll is very intuitive and setup goes smoothly. Payroll includes a PDF Payroll Manual with step-by-step instructions to help you get started. Of course, more complex payrolls will require more set up effort. To save time, you can import a text file with your employee's personal information. Year-to-date totals for each employee are easy to enter for a mid-year set up.

Does Payroll require that I have Internet access?


While Internet access is not a requirement to use Payroll, it is highly recommended. Periodic changes in the program for tax forms and tax tables are necessary when doing payroll. State tax information, tutorial videos and access to CheckMark's Knowledge Base are all available on-line.

Can I move my Payroll from Mac to Windows or from Windows to Mac at any time?


Yes, you can. The data files for Payroll are cross-platform which enables you to backup on one platform and restore to another at any time.

How do I get updates and patches for Payroll? How often?


The CheckMark Payroll Update is based on calendar year reporting and should be purchased each year to keep the software current. The Update includes the revised program, the latest tax tables and the latest tax forms. Invariably, there are changes to tax tables, tax forms or the program during the calendar year. To keep CheckMark Payroll current all year long, free Patches are available to users running the latest version. Both Updates and Patches are available on-line. Order the Update well before year's end so you are prepared for the new payroll year. Install the free Patch every time it's available. To be sure you are running the latest version, select "Check for Latest Version" under the Help menu. You'll need to have Internet access for this feature to work.

Can I correct errors I make in Payroll myself?


Yes, you have 100% control over your payroll. For errors that are a bit more complicated, CheckMark Software offers several support plans that give you access to CheckMark's support team to answer your questions about the Payroll program and correcting errors. The support team is not able to give tax advise.

Can I set up in the middle of a calendar year and still get year-end reports?


CheckMark Payroll is designed to be straight-forward and easy to use for any small business owner. You can start using the software at any time of year. Plus, we offer free support for up to 60 days or 90 minutes, whichever comes first, to get you off to a good start.

Does Payroll handle after-the-fact paychecks?


Yes, Payroll allows you to override figures to match checks already disbursed with the Calculate Pay window, or you can utilize the Disable All Calculations feature to make your data entry go faster.

Payroll offers links to popular accounting packages to post directly into your ledger. Programs such as CheckMark's MultiLedger®, MYOB®, Connected®, Peachtree® and QuickBooks® are supported.

Does Payroll handle both salaried and hourly employees?


Yes, Payroll can handle employees that are paid a salary; employees that are paid hourly; or employees that are paid both a salary and hourly wage in the same pay period. Payroll can also handle bonuses.

Yes, you can set up Payroll to calculate an hourly wage by a multiple of 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0.

Is there a limit on the number of companies I can run or employees that I can pay using Payroll?


No. CheckMark Payroll doesn't limit the number of employees you can set up or pay in the program. You can run unlimited companies and unlimited employees for one low price. As stated in the license agreement, CheckMark Payroll can be installed on multiple computers at only one business location.

What types or pay frequencies are available?


You can pay employees Daily, Weekly, Bi-Weekly, Semi-Monthly, Monthly, Quarterly, Semi-Annually or Annually with Payroll.

Do all employees have to be paid on the same pay frequency?


No, you can set each employee to be paid on whichever frequency you wish.

What is the largest check you can create using Payroll?


CheckMark Payroll will create a check up to $9,999,999.99 gross wages.

Can I pay vacation and/or sick time using Payroll?


Yes, Payroll will accrue vacation or sick time calculated on hours worked, per pay period, per month or per year. If your policy is to "use it or lose it," you can set a limit on the number of hours available. As you record vacation and/or sick time in Payroll, these numbers are deducted from the employee's available balance.

Can paid time off (PTO) be handled in Payroll?


Yes, Payroll will accrue PTO calculated on hours worked, per pay period, per month, or per year. If your policy is to "use it or lose it," you can set a limit as to the number of hours available. As you record PTO in Payroll, these numbers are deducted from the employee's available balance.

Can I import hours from a time clock system?


Yes, CheckMark Payroll can import a tab-delimited text file from a spreadsheet or time clock software.

Can Payroll handle medical and dental insurance?


Yes, you can set up each insurance deduction as a before tax deduction or an after tax deduction, and set up if the employer pays for the insurance, if the employee pays for the insurance, or both.

Can Payroll handle garnishments such as child support?


Yes, you can set up deductions for garnishments such as child support.

Does Payroll handle retirement plans such as a 401(k)?


Yes, you can set up your 401(k), as well as other retirement plans, in Payroll. Payroll will also handle the employer match portion if your company offers it.

Yes, Payroll can calculate this income while you are calculating your payroll. The details will print on the employee's check stub.

Can I use Payroll to pay commissions or piecework?


Yes, you can customize your rate for each employee and then calculate based on sales or pieces when calculating the rest of your payroll.

Do all my employees have to be set up with the same taxes, incomes and deductions?


No, you can select taxes, incomes and deductions and assign to each individual employee according to their personal selections.

I allocate my payroll to departments. Can Payroll handle this?


Yes. You can create up to 99 departments in each company. You can distribute hours for each employee by percentage, by hours worked each pay period or allocate their wages after creating paychecks.

I have employees in multiple states. Can Payroll handle this?


Yes, Payroll allows you to create a state taxes list with up to 30 state withholding tables. And you can assign the correct state withholding table to each employee easily. Reports are generated for each state.

Which tax forms does Payroll print?


Payroll will print the Form 940, Form 941, Form 941 Schedule B, Form 944, W-2's and the W-3 on blank paper.

Does Payroll support my state forms?


Currently, only the California DE-9 form is supported for printing on blank paper or electronic filing. NY users can file their quarterly reporting electronically only. Payroll, however, does supply you with comprehensive reports to help you fill in your state's quarterly and annual forms.

Does Payroll track local taxes?


CheckMark Payroll only supports a limited number of local taxes. For local taxes that aren't supported, Payroll allows you to enter and modify local taxes, which you're responsible to keep up-to-date.

How do I handle 1099 contractors in Payroll?


CheckMark Payroll is designed for calculating and reporting payroll for employees. Contractors that are issued a Form 1099 are technically "vendors" and it is recommended that you handle their checks in your accounting program.

Does Payroll handle new hire filing to the state?


No, Payroll does not print out a report for new hires. You're responsible to know and follow your state's regulations..

Does Payroll handle EFW2 filing?


Yes, Payroll will create the EFW2 file for federal filing and most states.

Does Payroll print on blank check stock?


Yes, Payroll can print on blank check stock and print MICR encoding.

Do I have to buy new checks to use CheckMark Payroll?


CheckMark Payroll is very flexible and allows you to edit the check printing format. Most checks that run as one-check-per-page will work. Three checks on a page or a check on the bottom third of the page will not print. You can order your checks directly from CheckMark and be assured of compatibility. Can I offer direct deposit services to my employees?


Yes, Payroll will create a file compatible with National Payment Corporations web direct deposit or an ACH file acceptable at most banks.

Do all my employees have to use direct deposit?


No. Since direct deposit is set up in each employee, you can have employees that receive regular printed paychecks and others that participate in direct deposit.

Will my bank accept direct deposit?


You will need to check with your bank. Direct deposit will work with any bank that will accept ACH (Automated Clearing House) files. (It is rare that banks cannot accept these files.)

Can a check be direct deposited into more than one account?


Payroll will create the ACH file for up to two accounts per employee per pay period. National Payment Corp allows you to deposit into up to four accounts for each employee per pay period.

Can I modify/void a check easily?


Yes, you can modify, void or delete a check quickly and easily in CheckMark Payroll.

Am I charged extra for more than one company?


No, Payroll will create and save as many payroll companies as you need and there is never an extra charge to you.

Am I charged extra because of the number of employees I have?


No. Payroll does not limit the number of employees set up in each payroll company. Enter as many employees as you want for no added cost.
